Ipad first impressions

by flotruglio on gen.30, 2010, under are you curious?

I don’t have the iPad but a friend of mine now have it and tell me his first impressions of the device.

When he looks for the first time this gadget, the first impressions are largely positive. Apple has once again built a product that looks good and feels great in the hand, and the familiar user interface, borrowed from the iPhone and iPod touch, is perfectly suited to the bigger screen. The iPad whizzes along, opening applications, re-sizing web pages, and zooming in and out of maps almost instantaneously.

It’s a great, fun gaming platform, and it’s lovely to view full-size web pages while browsing the internet. Developers, no doubt, are already rubbing their hands with glee about the apps and services they could tailor specifically for this device. The new touch-optimised iWork suite is beautifully realised, making it quick and easy — and, dare he says, fun — to piece together a spreadsheet or presentation. It also helps to elevate the iPad to more than just a plaything.

As Steve Jobs said during his keynote, if you’re going to create a third category of device, between the smartphone and the laptop, then it needs to be better than either for certain tasks. In many areas, this is true for the iPad — web browsing is much better on the iPad than the iPhone, just because of the bigger screen, and physically flicking through photos, music and movies is just more enjoyable on the iPad than a laptop.

Apple tablet rumors: 3G, dock connector

by flotruglio on gen.24, 2010, under are you curious?

The Apple tablet rumors are going to keep coming until the company finally releases this thing. Tech bloggers, and now even the mainstream media, can’t help themselves from wondering what Apple will or won’t do with the forthcoming device, which is widely anticipated to be introduced at Apple’s media event scheduled for Wednesday.

Here’s the latest roundup of speculation about the tablet.

  • The tablet will have a 3G connection, and there are two carriers being considered for it, says Fox News. Apple is in talks with AT&T and Verizon, but the details are still not finalized, according to sources within the companies.
  • There will be not one, but two dock connectors on it. iLounge says that will allow the tablet to be docked/charged in either landscape or portrait orientation.
  • AppleInsider’s sources say the tablet will look exactly like an overgrown iPod Touch, down to the home button, volume toggle, and power button.
  • Add McGraw-Hill and Hachette Book Group to the list of publishers Apple has approached about including their content on the tablet. It’s widely assumed that e-books, magazines, and newspapers will be a key part of Apple’s strategy for the device. It’s already been reported thatHarperCollinsThe New York Times, and Conde Nast have also been in talks on the same topic.

Be sure to come back to FLT.lab blot  since from Wednesday, when we’ll be blogging more about the Apple event.
